After months of seeking refuge inside, its time to get out into the countryside, and we feel blessed to be based right in the heart of the Mediterranean here in Malta.
The sun is out, as are the flowers; here’s a beautiful route to walk in the coming weeks that takes you through a variety of different natural habitats, from farmland and wooded areas, to bays, cliffs and garigue.
The walk starts in the northern part of Malta at the island’s largest sandy beach, Mellieha Bay or Ghadira Bay.
Start your country walk at the Mellieha bus terminal and walk to the gate, which is the entrance to the Ghadira Natural Reserve. Keep on walking towards the Torri L-Ahmar, The Red Tower, and you’ll reach the top of Marfa Ridge.
As you walk towards the far end of the ridge you will come across the small Immaculate Conception chapel and you can admire the breath-taking sea views from the cliff’s edge. Continue walking through farmed land, wooded areas and high stunning cliffs – keep going – and soon you’ll reach It-Torri L-Abjad. From here onwards, the path turns uphill and you will arrive at Paradise Bay.
As you leave Paradise Bay (after maybe stopping for a dip!) continue on the dirt road that takes you to areas with fantastic sea views and small paths winding down to terraced fields perched on the cliff side.
You’ll eventually arrive back to the Red Tower and the Ghadira Nature Reserve: happy, tired, and full of the joys of spring!
